What are dental emergencies?

Dental emergencies pop up out of the blue. Sports or accidents are common culprits of injuries like broken teeth. When a dental emergency strikes, it's crucial that you get the proper care.

There are various forms of dental emergencies, some more urgent than others. However, if you're experiencing a problem in your mouth, it's best to be cautious and seek treatment.

Dr. Trachtenberg offers quick evaluations and prompt care when dealing with a dental problem. A few of the dental emergencies he treats include:

  • Toothaches
  • Broken teeth
  • Abscessed teeth
  • Gum or lip injuries
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Lost fillings

If you have pain in your teeth or have suffered an injury to your mouth, Dr. Trachtenberg can help. It would help if you didn't let a fever or pain go on too long, as it could damage your teeth and gums more.

What are emergency treatments?

Dr. Trachtenberg provides fast and efficient care when you have a dental emergency. He evaluates your teeth to determine the root of the problem.

If you have an infection, he provides antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications to help ease the pain and eliminate the infection. This often helps with toothaches and abscessed teeth.

Bring it with you if you've lost your tooth from an injury. Dr. Trachtenberg tries his best to save the tooth or provides you with a bridge in the meantime. Sometimes, you may need a dental implant to replace the missing tooth.

If you've fractured a tooth or have broken it beyond repair, the best treatment may be to remove it altogether. Some dental injuries require Dr. Trachtenberg to remove the entire tooth from the root. It's known as a tooth extraction.

What happens during a tooth extraction?

If your dental emergency requires tooth extraction, Dr. Trachtenberg provides several options to make you comfortable. This is considered oral surgery. It can be done with minimal sedation or under IV sedation.

Suppose you're highly anxious about the extraction. In that case, Dr. Trachtenberg provides IV sedation so you're comfortable and don't know what's happening.

Once comfortable, Dr. Trachtenberg numbs your gum around the affected tooth. Using specialized instruments, he slowly loosens the tooth from the gum tissues and pulls it out from the socket.

Afterward, Dr. Trachtenberg puts gauze over the area so a clot can form in the empty socket. You may experience light bleeding over the next few hours, but it should stop within a day of the procedure, and the clot is essential for proper healing. When you have sedation for oral surgery, you need a driver to take you home.
